Starting With Them

Every conversation tempts us to open with our own agenda: our plan, our needs, our enthusiasm. The people who persuade best flip that script and start with what the listener cares about. It's harder than it sounds, because our minds default to our own point of view. A pitch, no matter how strong, built around what you want will fall flat with someone focused on what they want.

Once people hear their own concerns and goals reflected in what you say, their guard drops and they start to tune in a little more than usual. But how do you effectively communicate your ideas in a way that captures their attention? Here are three practices to get your words into others’ minds.

  • Get Curious About Them - You can't speak to what matters to someone until you know what it is. The signals are usually out in the open: what they mention without being asked, the frustrations they keep circling back to, and the subjects that make them light up. Ask one question about what they're aiming for in your next conversation, and pay attention to what makes them excited or irritated. The more you learn, the more luck you will have talking to the minds of others.

  • Reframe Your Pitch - Before you share an idea, make the proposition sound like a benefit to them. Say something like, "Here is how this moves you closer to your goal." This isn't spin or exaggeration, since people quickly spot an empty claim. It's about locating the true overlap between your idea and their priorities, and stating it clearly. Start by asking, "What problem does this solve for them?" From there, the rest of the conversation will flow much more easily.

  • Borrow Their Vocabulary - The way people talk reveals how they think. A busy manager may care about hours saved, a creative about room to experiment, a careful partner about avoiding risk. Mirror the terms and examples they use for their own world, so your idea sounds familiar instead of foreign. Lastly, when your examples come straight from their situation, they don't have to work to see the value. It clicks immediately. Work to make your ideas sound like they came from the minds of those you present them to.
